‘Ask This Old House” host Kevin O’Connor tackled some burning questions about household fire hazards in a recent visit to Northbrook.

O’Connor filmed at Underwriters Laboratories, a Northbrook-based safety science company, over the summer for an episode of the home renovation series scheduled to air Sunday on WTTW Create/World.

Heath Racela, the show’s senior producer and director, said a lab worker lit a block of wood on fire and dropped it on a roof section inside the lab to test the durability of shingles during a fire.

In another test, cooking oil was lit with a blowtorch to simulate a common house fire. Finally, a small living room area was built for the series and a firefighter lit a pillow on fire, which quickly spread to the upholstery of a chair.

“We used it to illustrate the idea that modern furnishings have a lot more synthetics than they had 30 or 40 years ago,” Racela said. “By seven minutes, almost everything was gone.”

The Chicago-area episode is scheduled to air 9 a.m. Sunday as part of the series’ 15th season, which is set to premiere Saturday on WTTW-Ch. 11.

An episode featuring “Ask This Old House” contractor Tom Silva’s visit to Chicago is expected air later in the season. Racela said Silva helped a Lincoln Square resident convert a one-car garage into a workshop by creating a fold-down workbench and mounting pegboards.
