One of Chicago’s most influential Japanese restaurants is closing Friday. Owned by Helen Mita and her son, Brian, Izakaya Mita expanded the scope of Japanese restaurants in Chicago when it opened in 2014. Instead of focusing exclusively on sushi or ramen, most of its menu was dedicated to what they liked to refer to as “Japanese soul food.” Last year, Brian Mita noted that the restaurant was created to honor his late father, who was from Japan.
Sadly, Brian Mita passed away in December 2021 after battling cancer for 2 1/2 years. The restaurant closed temporarily early in the pandemic, so he could continue treatment. But he was able to help the restaurant reopen in October 2021, which was one of his goals before he passed.
The restaurant announced the decision on Instagram. “It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce our closure this weekend. If you have the time, please join us for one final hoorah this weekend, and let’s leave Izakaya Mita on a high note! It has been a delight seeing all of you again, and our absolute pleasure to serve you once more.”
