Calumet College of St. Joseph has won a $1.44 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions Program, U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced Oct. 1.
The grant’s focus is to improve and strengthen the institution’s academic quality, institutional management, and fiscal stability.
In general, the Strengthening Institutions Program seeks to help schools become self-sufficient and expand their capacity to serve low-income students.
The college earmarked about half the funding for a new kitchen and kinesiology space to improve food service and create a catering kitchen for school events.
The grant will also support tutoring, supplemental instruction, technology upgrades, and mental health activities.

Tulley said the grant allows the college to improve its health and wellness center and to develop infrastructure to grow its endowment.
“This award will allow us to live out our mission in a more impactful way,” Tulley said.
