The Chicago White Sox went 7-6 against the Guardians during the regular season, going 4-2 at Rate Field and 3-4 in Cleveland. The American League Central rivals last played in September, when the Guardians won twice in the three-game series.

Game 1 of the best-of-five AL Division Series will be played Saturday at Progressive Field in Cleveland (noon, TBS and HBO Max), with Game 2 set for 4 p.m. Monday. The series then shifts to Rate Field starting Wednesday.

Here’s how their regular-season meetings unfolded.

June 22: White Sox 6, Guardians 5

White Sox players stood near their dugout, a celebration on pause. Both the Sox and Guardians awaited word from a video review on whether Tristan Peters had made it home safely ahead of catcher Patrick Bailey’s tag on a single by Sam Antonacci.

“I was pretty confident I was in there,” Peters said. “Obviously, it was a close play.”

Would it be a comeback win for the Sox? Or extra innings? “I was just standing there and they were all waiting,” Antonacci said.

The original call on the field was safe. And after the lengthy review, that ruling was upheld. Antonacci’s two-out, two-run single in the ninth propelled the Sox to a 6-5 victory.

June 23: White Sox 2, Guardians 1

White Sox designated hitter Randal Grichuk doubled and scored on a single by shortstop Colson Montgomery in the second inning against the Guardians.

Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas led off the sixth inning with a home run.

Those were the only three hits in the game for the Sox. And it was just enough to defeat the Guardians 2-1 at Rate Field.

The Sox received excellent pitching from Sean Burke and Sean Newcomb — and the timely hitting — to take sole possession of first place in the American League Central.

June 24: Guardians 4, White Sox 4

The never-say-die attitude of the White Sox was on full display against the Guardians. Down to their last out in the ninth inning, Braden Montgomery and Randal Grichuk hit back-to-back home runs to tie the score.

“We don’t give up,” Grichuk said.

But the Guardians shook off the rally, scoring a run in the 10th to defeat the Sox 4-3 at Rate Field. Kahlil Watson drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the 10th to prevent the Sox from sweeping the three-game series.

The White Sox were flirting with disaster all night.

It struck with one out in the ninth inning when Brayan Rocchio hit a two-run walk-off home run off reliever Grant Taylor to lift the Guardians to a 6-5 victory against the Sox at Progressive Field.

“I wasn’t landing the curveball earlier,” Taylor said. “I was going to stick to my strength. I have a good fastball, especially to lefties. I threw a pretty good location but he was looking for it and got a good swing off.”

A leadoff walk to Rhys Hoskins set in motion the ninth inning. It was one of nine walks Sox pitchers surrendered.

White Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas capped an epic 10-pitch at-bat with a three-run home run to left field in the fifth inning against the Guardians.

A lengthy rain delay followed. When play resumed, the Sox saw the lead float away in an eventual 4-3 loss in 10 innings at Progressive Field.

“It’s a tough one,” manager Will Venable said. “You have to find a way to score more runs. These guys are battling, they have a really good bullpen, they did a good job, so credit to them.

“It’s tough to score against them, it’s tough to keep them from scoring. There’s a lot of little plays here and there. Pitches here and there on both sides that really made a difference.”

Each of the first five meetings this season between the White Sox and Guardians were one-run games. The trend of tight games continued at Progressive Field.

Colson Montgomery marked the one-year anniversary of his big-league debut by hitting a tiebreaking solo home run in the eighth inning, and the Sox added a run in the ninth for a 3-1 victory on the Fourth of July.

“This whole series has felt like a playoff series,” Montgomery said. “But then I look at the calendar and we are not even past All-Star break yet. It’s a good learning experience for down the road.”

Miguel Vargas had one RBI and one run on the day he became a first-time All-Star.

The White Sox regained sole possession of first place in the American League Central after a 7-6 victory against the Guardians at Progressive Field.

Kyle Teel, Tristan Peters and Colson Montgomery homered early as the Sox built a 6-3 lead. The Guardians pulled even in the fifth on a three-run home run by Gabriel Arias.

The Sox broke the tie in the sixth, scoring a run when Sam Antonacci grounded out to first base. They held on to earn a split of the four-game series.

White Sox pitching coach Zach Bove visited starter Noah Schultz after the left-hander hit Guardians cleanup batter Jo Adell with a pitch to load the bases with one out Friday at Rate Field.

The next hitter, Angel Martínez, drove in two with a single to left field.

Manager Will Venable then made his way to the mound. After a discussion, the umpires announced that Schultz would have to exit because of the second mound visit of the inning. With the sixth batter of the game about to step into the box, the Sox made a pitching change, calling on David Sandlin to replace Schultz.

“Just an inexcusable mistake by me where we had an appeal play that we wanted to execute, and in the urgency of trying to make that happen, just totally lost that we had visited, and obviously that was a mistake,” Venable said. “So just messed it up.”

Martínez was a headache to both pitchers, hitting a grand slam against Sandlin and finishing with a career-high six RBIs as the Guardians defeated the Sox 8-2.

Aug. 8: White Sox 6, Guardians 3

The White Sox rallied with a five-run sixth inning to snap a four-game losing streak.

Rhys Hoskins’ two-run, sixth-inning home run off Anthony Kay gave the Guardians a brief lead, and Gavin Williams held them to one hit over five innings. But the Sox broke through in their half of the sixth on Munetaka Murakami’s solo home run off Williams and a pair of two-run hits by Tristan Peters and Chase Meidroth against reliever Colin Holderman.

The bullpen did the rest, with Bryan Hudson and Grant Taylor pitching the final two innings.

“We needed that one,” Venable said. “I don’t think there are two ways about it. It was a great game, especially to come back there against Gavin Williams, who continues to be really hard to score upon.”

Aug. 9: White Sox 5, Guardians 3

The White Sox and Guardians were forced to go to their bullpens after rain caused a 2-hour, 23-minute delay just ahead of the second inning at Rate Field.

When the game resumed, the Sox turned to 2024 first-round draft pick Hagen Smith.

“It was definitely different,” Smith said. “I didn’t really know I was going in until about an hour into the delay, then they said I was going in and it sounded good to me. So I just went from there.”

The lefty struck out three and walked four over two scoreless innings in his major-league debut, earning the win and aiding the Sox in a 5-3 victory.

Colson Montgomery hit a tie-breaking, three-run home run during a four-run third inning for the Sox, who won two of three in the important series.

Sometimes a team just needs a bounce to go their way.

The White Sox received a huge one — off Tristan Peters’ helmet — in the sixth inning of their crucial three-game series against the Guardians.

Colson Montgomery came up with runners on first and second and no outs. He hit a grounder to first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, who threw to second in an attempt for a double play. But the throw bounced off Peters’ helmet and went into center field.

“I saw where he was playing, playing back a little bit and I was just going to run and see, maybe get in the way — not obviously get out of the baseline,” Peters said. “And then, felt it hit my head. It was probably one of the best feelings ever. When someone hits your head, anyways.”

Andrew Benintendi scored on the error. That was the first of six runs in the sixth inning for the Sox in a 7-3 victory at Progressive Field.

Sept. 15: Guardians 7, White Sox 6

White Sox left fielder Sam Antonacci stood near the warning track after picking up the baseball that was just out of his diving reach.

Sox players then made the long, slow walk back to the dugout while fireworks went off and the Guardians celebrated in the outfield.

The race for the American League Central title tightened with a walk-off, two-run double in the ninth inning by Brayan Rocchio that gave the Guardians a 7-6 win at Progressive Field.

It was a gut-punch for the Sox, who were one strike away from expanding their division lead. Instead, that lead is a half-game heading into the regular-season series finale.

White Sox relievers lost their command in the sixth inning against the Guardians. And the Sox lost their grip on the American League Central.

The Sox fell to second place in the division with a 6-3 loss at Progressive Field.

The game turned in the sixth. Sox reliever Hagen Smith issued a pair of walks before Petey Halpin hit a three-run home run against Sean Newcomb that gave the Guardians a 5-3 lead.

Newcomb then walked Brayan Rocchio, who later scored on a double by José Ramírez. The Guardians scored four runs in the inning off the two hits and four walks.

“Just not finishing pitches in general, like the sinker to Halpin,” Newcomb said. “Missed middle. And it was the same with the walks, just trying to be too fine.”
