WEST NILE RELATED DEATH REPORTED IN DUPAGE COUNTY
A DuPage County adult resident has died due to West Nile virus, the DuPage County Health Department reported.
It is the first human death related to the mosquito-borne virus in 2026 in the county. No information was released about the individual.
The health department said there have been six human cases in Illinois to date, with two other fatalies — one in Chicago and the other in Shelby County. Last year, there was 14 human cases and one death related to the virus.
Most cases of West Nile virus infections have little to no symptoms, but about 20% of individuals with the virus report symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash, a news release said.
People over the age of 60, and those with medical conditions such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease and organ transplants, are at a higher risk for serious illness.
The health department’s environmental health services team and its partner agencies monitor West Nile virus activity through October. The department urges residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites and reduce areas where mosquitos breed.
