Robert Chatman-Jones, 25, of Bellwood, arranged to meet Coreon Davis in a parking lot on Amersale Drive on Aug. 29, 2021, to purchase an illegal gun Davis was selling, prosecutors said in a news release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.
When Chatman-Jones approached Davis and another man, both of whom were seated in a car, with money for the weapon, he informed them he was “short” on the amount requested. A struggle ensued between Davis and Chatman-Jones, with the latter ultimately pulling a weapon and shooting Davis in the head and left hand and the other man in the left leg, the release said.
The two victims left the scene and were found inside their vehicle by Aurora police at McCoy Drive and Vaughn Road. Davis later died at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, the release said.
Naperville police officers recovered two .40-caliber shell casings and more than $100 cash in the Amersale parking lot. Chatman-Jones was arrested the next day at an Aurora apartment complex parking lot, the release said.
Jury members deliberated for just one hour before returning the guilty verdict Thursday after a three-day trial. Chatman-Jones remains at the DuPage County jail, where he’s been held since his arrest.
“What began as an illegal gun sale quickly turned violent resulting in a senseless loss of life,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “The murder of Coreon Davis serves as a stark reminder that guns in the hands of those willing to use violence can result in deadly, irreversible consequences.”
Chatman-Jones’ next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 26. He faces a sentence of between 45 years and life in prison.
