NAPERVILLE D203 ADVANCES DIGITAL SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM
The Naperville District 203 School Board has approved an initiative to generate revenue through controlled digital sponsorships.
The plan allows the Naperville Central and Naperville North Athletics and Activities departments and their Booster Club to seek advertising with local vendors that will benefit students by providing funds for uniforms, equipment and other needs that come up outside the annual budget cycle.
The high school’s athletic directors submitted the proposal to the school board earlier this month, and it was approved Tuesday by a 5-0 vote.
Advertisements would be limited to digital displays on the video boards at such locations as the high schools’ stadiums, gyms and pools. All proposed sponsorships would be subject to the district’s review before they are displayed, and political messages or advocacy would be prohibited.
Funds raised would be evenly split between the Naperville Central and Naperville North Booster organizations for future student benefits.
Board members said they liked the student learning aspects of the program in which students could participate in areas such as marketing, business, graphic design and digital media production.
Board President Charles Cush said the students are getting real-world experiences, and it may spark an interest in what they want to pursue in their futures.

“I’m not normally the biggest fan of sponsorships,” board member Holly Blastic said during the meeting. “But this … is growing our community, it’s involving our boosters, it’s keeping the money and the funds for students and their activities.”
