Jad Debiy, 8, died Thursday after being struck by a car while riding an electric scooter on Sept. 11 in Bridgeview, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Debiy and a friend were riding e-scooters north on the frontage road west of Harlem Avenue, and were crossing 93rd Street when the accident occurred, Bridgeview police said.
The driver of the car was turning left onto 93rd Street from Harlem Avenue when he struck Debiy, police said. The driver stopped and 911 was called, police said.
The driver of the car was initially cited for failing to yield, police said, and an investigation by the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team is ongoing.
Debiy was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. Thursday at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn.
Debiy is one of several people to have died in Chicago and the surrounding area in the past year while riding e-scooters, including 16-year-old Alex Blacio, who died in North Center last month.
Earlier this year, Illinois lawmakers passed a bill to regulate e-bikes and e-scooters, which will go into effect Jan. 1, 2027 and will require all e-scooter riders to be at least 16 years old, among other restrictions.
