An Aurora Oktoberfest event to be hosted by the Auroraland German Heritage Society and Kiwanis Club of Aurora has been rescheduled from Saturday, Sept. 19, to Saturday, Oct. 10, due to predicted storms this Saturday, officials announced Thursday.

Lucas Albright, president of the Kiwanis Club of Aurora, said the Oktoberfest event will still be held at the Phillips Park Main Pavilion on Ray Moses Drive in Aurora, just now on Oct. 10.

Albright said the rescheduled event will still include live bands, activities for children, face painting, a dirndl and lederhosen costume contest, German beer and food such as bratwurst from the Wurst Kitchen. He said a planning committee has been planning the event for a year.

Proceeds from the rescheduled event will go to the Kiwanis Club of Aurora, the Auroraland German Heritage Society and the Phillips Park Foundation.

“It’s good to continue to preserve Phillips Park,” he said. “We will also be able to continue to do good in the community and help the children of Aurora, which is what the Kiwanis Club does. It’s a win-win.”

Albright said this is the second year for the Aurora Oktoberfest event and the first year the Kiwanis Club of Aurora has helped plan the celebration. The Kiwanis Club stepped in, he said, because the Auroraland German Heritage Society needed additional volunteers for the event.

Albright said he hopes to continue the partnership and annual Oktoberfest celebration.

As for the expected storms that caused the event to be rescheduled, intermittent rain is expected throughout the weekend, according to Theodore Van De Sampel, Aurora emergency management coordinator, and forecasts from the National Weather Service.

Van De Sampel said he expects localized pockets of flooding throughout Aurora from rainfall this week and weekend. But he said the rain is expected to be “pretty benign” compared to other recent storms in the area.

Tim Wagner, Fox Valley Park District public relations and content strategist, said that as of Thursday afternoon, park district programming has not been affected by recent or forecasted rainfall.
