Catholic Charities plays role in storm efforts

Following the severe storms Aug. 11 that caused widespread damage and extended power outages across Northwest Indiana, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Gary continues to provide direct financial assistance to residents of Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties, according to the Diocese of Gary website.

Storm Relief assistance may be available for food replacement due to storm-related power outages, insurance deductibles related to storm damage, essential home repairs resulting from storm damage, household appliance replacement for essential appliances damaged or lost as a result of the storms, storm-related rent or mortgage assistance and other verified storm-related needs.

Sources for funding came from the Chicago Bears, Catholic Charities USA, Foundations of East Chicago, Legacy Foundation, Porter County Community Foundation, United Healthcare Group and hundreds of individual donors who have responded with compassion for their Northwest Indiana neighbors, the website said.

NIPSCO, foundation partner to deliver $600K in Porter County

The Porter County Community Foundation recently received a $600,000 contribution from Northern Indiana Public Service Company with support from the NiSource Charitable Foundation to support disaster relief following the Aug. 11 storm.
The Foundation  will steward and allocate the funds directly to 14 frontline organizations to provide immediate assistance to Porter County households, according to a release.

Funding recipients include: The Salvation Army of Porter County, Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, Hilltop Food Pantry, Portage Township Food Pantry, Family Promise of Porter County, Porter County Aging and Community Services and Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana.

INDOT to host winter seasonal hiring events

The Indiana Department of Transportation will host hiring events in Lake and LaPorte counties in October.

INDOT’s winter seasonal hiring events are planned for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Gary Subdistrict office, 7601 Melton Road, Gary. For those in LaPorte County, the hiring event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6 at the LaPorte Subdistrict office, 315 E. Boyd Blvd.

Winter seasonal positions run from November through late March. Pay starts at $21 per hour for full-time operations and $25 per hour for on-call snowplow-only operations, the release said. Job duties for full-time seasonal positions include performing general highway and traffic maintenance, snow and ice removal and other duties related to winter operations. A valid CDL is required.

OB/GYN joins Franciscan in Michigan City

Dr. David Preskill, obstetrician/gynecologist, is now part of the Franciscan Physician Network and is accepting new patients in Michigan City, a release said.

Preskill earned his medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Columbus-Cabrini Medical Center in Chicago.

He is accepting new patients for in-person visits at Franciscan Physician Network’s Franciscan Medical Pavilion, 3500 Franciscan Way, third floor, in Michigan City. Call 219-861-8785.

Braun announces appointments

Gov. Mike Braun recently announced new appointments to various state boards and commissions.

Appointments include: Marie Forszt and Carly Brandenburg from Lake County to the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission. Their terms expire Aug. 31, 2030.

Dr. Nicole Albright from Lake County, was named to the Indiana Optometry Board. Her term expires Sept. 30, 2030.

Methodist Foundation adds two to board

The Methodist Hospitals Foundation has announced the appointment of Suchita Shah and Sarah Pomponi to its Board of Directors.

Shah and Pomponi, according to a release, join the Foundation at a time of continued growth as it works to expand philanthropic support for Methodist Hospitals programs, services and initiatives.

Shah has been a licensed real estate broker with McColly Real Estate since 1996. In addition to Methodist, she currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Indian American Cultural Center and previously served on the boards of the American Heart Association and the Lake County Medical Auxiliary, the release said.

Pomponi, according to the release, is a business owner and healthcare practice administrator with extensive experience in strategic branding, marketing, communications, relationship-building and community engagement.
