Remembering 9/11. Then-President George W. Bush went from reading a book to elementary students to becoming a “wartime president” after planes flew into the twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

Resignation. Legislative Inspector General Michael McCuskey announced his resignation amid criticism over his handling of an investigation into disgraced former state Rep. Harry Benton.

It’s all about the dividends. If the GOP wins the midterms, President Donald Trump is promising cold hard cash in the form of a $5,000 “dividend” for every adult American citizen. Our eyebrows are raised.

  1. “McCuskey’s resignation is significant, but it does not end the culture of harassment that has persisted in Springfield for far too long. We must strengthen the laws that guard against harassment, build a process that survivors can trust, and show the leadership required to earn the public’s confidence. The work is not finished.” — State Rep. Mary Beth Canty of Arlington Heights on news of Legislative Inspector General Michael McCuskey’s resignation
  2. “Our community feels pretty disrespected. If it’s approved, it would drive a knife through the heart of this community.” — Ald. Nicole Lee about plans to establish a giant railroad maintenance facility in her ward and possibly move the White Sox out of the South Side
  3. “As both parties have continued to chase the extremes, both ideologically and on a personality level, more and more people feel like they don’t have a home. Being able to give them a place where we can talk common sense on policies, we can identify the challenges and actually seek out solutions while the two parties just continue to snip at each other — we can go and try to make things better in our state.” — Independent gubernatorial candidate Collin Corbett
  4. “I became a wartime president. There was no doubt in my mind that this is not a law enforcement event; this was a war, and that the job of the president and the country and his team is to rally the nation to do what’s necessary to protect our people.” — Former President George W. Bush reflecting on the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11
  5. “If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them. I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.” — President Donald Trump
