Stephens, brother of Rosemont mayor Bradley Stephens and son of former Rosemont mayor, the late Donald E. Stephens, will still have a seat on the board, despite no longer leading it.
“As Triton College’s Board of Trustees, we acknowledge Mr. Stephens’ more than 30 years of service as Board Chair and recognize the dedication demonstrated throughout that tenure,” Triton College said in a statement.
Stephens has been a longtime leader at Triton College, a school in River Grove with an enrollment of around 17,000 students. He was elected to the Board in 1991 and assumed the role of chairman one year later, according to Triton.
This decision to step down comes after charged with felony possession of cocaine on July 31. Harvard police officers stopped Mark Stephens for speeding, according to a news release. As he got out of the car, police said they observed him drop an unlabeled prescription bottle to the ground. A field test confirmed it contained cocaine, according to the news release.
Officers initially smelled the odor of unburnt cannabis during the stop, according to police, and Mark Stephens handed them an open container of weed.
He was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver, speeding and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, which is a Class 4 Felony, according to court documents.
