Politics and violence. Crime is down overall, yes, but 41 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend of Aug. 28, causing a flurry of reactions in Chicago and beyond.

Tragedy in Nepal. Many of us thought videos of massive floods raging through Nepalese villages were AI-generated, and yet they were all too real. More than 1,000 people are dead, and thousands remain missing.

A Chicago socialist vs. Chicago DSA. Our local democratic socialists have a socialist problem as Ald. Jeanette Taylor has made her concerns known. Loudly and clearly.

  1. “Chicago violence is unchecked and at record levels. It has never been worse! This weekend 41 people were shot, 3 DEAD. These numbers are becoming normalized. It is out of control!” — President Donald Trump
  2. “I find him to be a sorry individual, and if he was serious about driving violence down not just in Chicago, but across the country, he would not be engaged in endless illegal wars. The president is investing more to bomb children than he is to feed children.” — Mayor Brandon Johnson responding to President Trump
  3. “I’m still a socialist. DSA is anti-Black. They got issues, and they got to work with them. … There’s still gonna be people who support me. It’s OK.” — Ald. Jeanette Taylor on losing support from Chicago Democratic socialists
  4. “There can be no greater pain than losing loved ones, homes and livelihoods. Without making excuses, we have mobilized the entire state machinery on a war footing and are working around the clock to save lives and provide relief to every citizen in the affected areas.” — Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah on devastating floods that have killed thousands
  5. “The way things work today is that the tax levy has nothing to do with the actual value of the properties. It only has to do with how much money politicians want to raise.” — Nico Tsatsoulis
  6. “To think that the promise and hope and joy and anticipation of Trump 2016 could, over the course of 10 years, collapse into this ugly, warmongering –– taken as a whole, mentally ill heap of crazy with some of the most unstable and lunatic people seemingly directing the president’s actions. If I had any clue that anything remotely like this was even possible, I would never have gotten involved in supporting Trump in the first place. And I’m very ashamed that I did.” — Far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos, after he was deported
