ELGIN MAKES INVESTOPEDIA’S LIST OF BEST PLACES TO RETIRE

Investopedia recently included Elgin on its 2026 list of the best cities in the United States for retirees.

An article published Aug. 25 noted cited Elgin’s affordable housing, walkability, accessible healthcare, cultural and recreational activities in addition to the fact that Illinois has no state income tax on Social Security benefits.

The online publication evaluated more than 500 communities for factors that included affordability, cost of living, healthcare, lifestyle, community, and climate and environment, according to the city of Elgin website.

‘THE LIGHTNING THIEF’ BEING PRESENTED AT ELGIN COMMUNITY

Fox Valley Theatre Company, the teen and young adult performance program of Children’s Theatre of Elgin, will stage “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical” from Sept. 11-20, at Elgin Community College’s Blizzard Theatre.

The musical is based on Rick Riordan’s bestselling novel about Percy Jackson, the half-blood son of a Greek god who discovers powers he cannot control and monsters on his trail, according to a production news release.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. The Sunday, Sept. 13, performance will feature an ASL interpreter. There will be sensory-adapted performances at 2 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 12 and 19.

“We incorporated a revolving stage, trap doors, practical effects, puppets, and swordfights with two unimaginably talented casts of young performers to bring the world of Percy Jackson and the Olympians to life,” director Larissa Catalano said in the release. “I cannot wait to see the audience’s reactions when they see stage magic happen right before their eyes,”

DUNDEE TOWNSHIP PARK DISTRICT HOSTING PICKLEBALL TOURNEY

Dundee Township Park District will host a fall pickleball tournament from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Randall Oaks Recreation Center, 500 N. Randall Road, West Dundee.

The tournament is for adults ages 18 and over and will use a round-robin format followed by a double-elimination bracket, with each player guaranteed five games, according to the park district’s website.

Divisions will include women’s doubles, men’s doubles and open for intermediate level and advanced players.

The entry fee is $100 per two-person team for Dundee Township residents and $120 for nonresidents. To register, go to www.dtpd.org/athletics-adult.

FOX VALLEY BEAUX ARTS FUNDRAISER PLANNED FOR SEPT. 12

Fox Valley Beaux Arts will hold “Brushstrokes of America,” a fundraiser luncheon, from 11 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Elgin Country Club, 2575 Weld Road.

In addition to lunch, the event will feature a silent auction, raffles and a fashion show of styles from Chico’s in The Arboretum of South Barrington, according to a news release.

Money raised will fund college scholarships for recent high school graduates majoring or minoring in the arts.

ELGIN FIRE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE SCHEDULED FOR SEPT. 12

Elgin Fire Department will hold a free open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Fire Station 2, 650 Big Timber Road.

The day will include a fire response demonstration at 11 a.m., a Fire Explorers demonstration at noon, and a fire sprinkler demonstration at 1 p.m., according to a city website post.

Other attractions will include the Kane County Sheriff K9 team, fire extinguisher demonstrations and car seat checks provided by Advocate Aurora Health.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOSTING AN OLD-FASHIONED TOOL SHOW

Dundee Township Historical Society will present a free display of old-fashioned tools from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at Centerville School, the one-room schoolhouse in Randall Oaks Park, 1180 N. Randall Road, West Dundee.

The display will feature hand tools, farm implements and household items used in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It’s intended to show how difficult life was before electricity, automation and technology, the society’s website said.
