Nine Gary and Lake County police officers are on administrative leave following the fatal shooting of a security officer who was allegedly acting erratically late Friday night at the Adam Benjamin Metro Center in Gary.
According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, officers from the Gary Police and the Lake County Sheriff’s departments responded around 10:54 p.m. to a report of an armed security officer who was showing signs of unusual and erratic behavior at the Metro Station located at Broadway and 4th Avenue.

The release stated that officers tried to de‑escalate the situation, but, at about 11:20 p.m., a confrontation occurred between the suspect and responding officers, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 67-year-old Kenneth Williams of Gary. Both the preliminary cause and manner of death are currently listed as pending. A forensic autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday in Crown Point, according to the coroner’s release.
The ISP’s initial investigation determined that six Gary Police officers and three Lake County Sheriff’s officers discharged their weapons. All of the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave per agency policy, the ISP release stated.
The Indiana State Police is not identifying the officers, deferring any release of names to the respective agencies.
