The council added $64,500 to the ward’s budget, most of which will be dedicated to the program to help residents recover from unexpected storm damage costs this summer.
Residents can apply to the grant program online and could receive up to $1,500 per property owner, according to the web page of Ald. Jonathan Nunez, 4th Ward.
The applicant can submit paid invoices and photo evidence of storm damage to the 4th Ward Committee, officials said. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
In addition to the storm damage program, around $9,500 of the funding approved Tuesday will be used to offset costs for a sidewalk replacement initiative completed by the Randall West Homeowners Association, according to the approved funding resolution.
Another part of the approved funding will support the ward’s 2026 donation and sponsorship funds.
The storm damage grant program was originally created to help residents with out-of-pocket costs after a major storm in mid-August 2025.
On Tuesday night, the council approved expanding the program to include all storms that impact the ward.
Uninsured costs from storms were especially high this summer because many residents did not have flood insurance, said Nunez and city officials.
Floods this summer affected many residents who do not live in floodplains, where flood insurance is not required, said Felipe Rocha, a lifelong Aurora resident and local insurance agent. Homeowners insurance often does not cover flood damage without additional coverage specific to flooding, Rocha said.
Nunez previously told The Beacon-News there was confusion in his ward about what insurance did and did not cover following the storms this summer, and residents had to cover some costs out of pocket. He hopes the grant program can help reimburse residents for some of these costs.
Other resources are also available for Aurora area residents affected by recent storms.
The level of reported damage in Kane County qualified the county for federal recovery assistance, which includes low-interest disaster loans to help affected residents and businesses cover uninsured or underinsured damages.
Residents can apply for this aid until Oct. 5, 2026. Businesses can apply until May 5, 2027. For online applications, go to sba.gov/disaster.
Aurora area counties were also included in the state’s disaster proclamation issued Aug. 18 by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
Additional resources were made available through the state’s proclamation, such as temporary tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by severe weather in the referenced areas of the proclamation, according to an Aug. 20 press release
