Indiana disaster relief fund providing up to $5,000 in assistance
The State of Indiana is encouraging Northwest Indiana residents who suffered storm damage to call 211 or visit IN211.org.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is using 211 to collect damage information to help them document the full extent of the Aug. 11 storm’s impact and support any future request for a major disaster declaration.
Impacted Hoosiers may qualify for emergency aid grants of up to $5,000, which are intended to assist families with essential needs, including clothing and uninsured medical devices, particularly for individuals who have been displaced from their homes.

Weatherhead replacement assistance program
The Legacy Foundation is partnering with the Lake County Community Corvette Club to offer assistance to Gary homeowners whose electrical weatherheads were damaged in the Aug. 11 derecho.
The program covers basic repairs related to storm-damaged weatherheads, minor conduit repairs or fixes, and standard electrical mast and weathered replacement.
To be eligible, you must be a homeowner of a residential property in Gary, have a weatherhed that has not already been repaired or replaced that was damaged in the recent storm, and agree to work with a participating electrician assigned through the program.

Walmart partners with Urban League for relief event
Several groups will be distributing emergency relief supplies in Gary.
On Monday, the Urban League of Northwest Indiana is partnering with Walmart to offer emergency relief supplies from 1-2:30 p.m. at St. Timothy Community Church, 1600 W. 25th Avenue.

Physician group, Franciscan announce partnership
Franciscan Alliance and Millennium Physician Group recently announced a strategic partnership designed to strengthen primary care, expand patient access and advance high-quality, affordable healthcare for patients across Indiana, according to a release.

The Crossroads Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Women’s Brunch Oct. 1 at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road,

Keynote speaker is Diane Primo, the CEO of the Purpose Brand agency, a Chicago-based public relations, branding and digital marketing firm,
the chamber website said. She is also the author of “ADAPT: Scaling Purpose in a Divided World” and “ALL REPORT: Culture, Diversity, Leadership — Stop Talking and Execute.” Tickets are $60. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. with registration and buffet, followed from 10 a.m.-noon with the program. According to the website, the inaugural Women In Leadership Award (WILA) will also be presented.

Doula workshop planned for October
Franciscan Health Crown Point is hosting a DONA International Birth Doula workshop over two weekends in October.
Doulas are trained professionals who provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to their clients before, during and shortly after childbirth, a release said. The Franciscan Health Crown Point Family Birth Center offers doula services to families free of charge via a volunteer doula program.
The doula workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 3-4 and Oct. 10-11 at Franciscan Health Crown Point, 12750 St. Francis Drive. Participants must attend all four days of classes to receive a certificate of completion.

Genesis opens Schererville showroom
Genesis of Schererville has officially opened its new nearly 25,000-square-foot showroom at 5800 W Lincoln Highway, Schererville.
The new showroom reflects the Genesis philosophy of modern luxury, featuring expansive natural light, a dedicated interior Zen garden and a hospitality-inspired environment, a release said. The facility features 12 service bays. A glass wall between the customer lounge and the shop floor allows owners to watch their vehicle as work is performed. Franciscan leaders, dignitaries break ground
Franciscan Alliance recently broke ground on the Franciscan Alliance School of Osteopathic Medicine, which is slated to open in 2030.
The groundbreaking ceremony included a blessing by The Most Rev. Robert McClory, bishop of the Diocese of Gary, as well as comments by Franciscan leaders, board members and local and state dignitaries, according to a release.
The Franciscan Alliance School of Osteopathic Medicine is being constructed by Tonn and Blank Construction on a 100-acre campus at the northeast corner of Interstate 65 and U. S. 231, just north of Franciscan Health Crown Point. Enrollment is planned to expand annually to 200 students per class, with the goal of reaching a total enrollment of 800 students, the release said.
Free cooking class for cancer survivors Sept. 18
Franciscan Health Cancer Center Munster is hosting a free Mediterranean cuisine cooking class for cancer survivors and their caregivers Sept. 18.
Attendees are invited to learn about Mediterranean cuisine with Franciscan Health Dietitian Elizabeth Remmers. Class members will taste samples of the recipes being prepared and will receive Mediterranean cuisine recipes to take home as part of the event, a release said.
The course is scheduled to take place from 1-2:30 p.m. Sept. 16 in the St. Clare Conference Room of the Franciscan Health Medical Arts Center at 701 Superior Ave. Registration is required by Sept. 7.
