D203 EMBRACING GOOGLE TO DETRIMENT OF STUDENTS

I have lost all trust and faith in Naperville School District 203 to make decisions to protect children’s brains while they’re still in development. Its decision to include programs like Google Classroom in its curriculum under the guise of education is dangerous.

Google is a private company that’s out for private gain. It should not be anywhere in the educational system. Concentration, impulse control and emotional regulation all suffer dramatically because of tech exposure at young ages. Test scores are not going up as private companies have promised in their sales pitches.

According to the National Library of Medicine/National Center for Biotechnology information, “Recent research indicates that screen media use may have serious adverse effects on children’s health over the long term, making this a pressing public health concern. It has raised the likelihood that children will become obese, experience behavioral problems, sleep irregularities, poor academic performance.”

Parents are not being given the opportunity to refuse or opt out of these addictive apps or Google Classroom. Tech is being forced on kids and their parents. District 203 is investing in private businesses and technology, not in children’s development or future generations.

The district is being forced to make budget cuts but somehow there is always money for more tech. District 203 can’t pay teachers or bus drivers more but we can get new apps. The district is focused on what makes life easier for the adults by using AI while ignoring the damage done to the kids.

Scientific studies show that individual screen time is severely damaging to developing brains. Cincinnati Hospital studies suggest that “relationships between higher media use and brain structure begin to manifest in early childhood and may become more extensive over time.”

Test scores are not going up and kids are losing basic life skills. The hand/brain connection is made stronger when writing by hand. Using tablets and tech do nothing but damage brains. The stimulating apps are more of a drug for the brain than education.

Parents need to rise up and protect their children’s education and development because school district decisions prove they are not protecting the integrity of our children’s education or development. The more tech is added into schools and curriculum, the more children suffer long term.
