Glenwood Academy seeks volunteers for storm cleanup
Volunteers are needed to help with cleanup efforts at Glenwood Academy in the wake of a tornado tearing through the 120-acre campus, leaving broken windows, damaged buildings and upended trees.
It was the second storm in two weeks to cause damage to the school, a private residential educational facility in Glenwood for more than 150 students from 7 to 23. It offers a supportive learning community to those who have challenging family situations affected by violence, poverty and other circumstances.
Individuals or groups who want to volunteer should email [email protected]. Anyone interested in making a financial donation is asked to visit www.glenwoodacademy.org/donated.
Rock Island Metra closures delayed
Recent storms in the area have led to Metra delaying the closure of its Rock Island line for construction work from this weekend to the weekend of Aug. 28-30, with service expected to be restored in time for the morning rush hour on Aug. 31.
The last outbound train from Chicago to Joliet (Train 511) will be at 8:25 p.m. Aug. 28 from the LaSalle Street Station, making all stops except 95th Street/Longwood, 103rd/Washington Heights on the main line and 123rd Street and Prairie Street on the Beverly Branch. The last inbound train (Train 512) will leave at 6:25 p.m. Aug. 28 from Joliet.
The closures are required because of the construction of the new Auburn Park Station at 79th Street in Chicago and Metra bridges above the Norfolk Southern freight tracks there needing to be raised.
Alternative transportation is available on the Metra Electric Line or the CTA’s Red Line, as well as PACE buses. Details are at rtachicago, org or 312-836-7000.
