The South Holland Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver in a fatal weekend hit-and-run accident, the village said in a statement Monday.

The crash occurred late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, the village said. Police responded early Saturday morning to the 100 block of East 173rd Street, near the Babe Ruth baseball field, in response to a report of a dead man in the roadway near the railroad tracks, the village said.

Police said the victim, 59-year-old Cornell Carpenter, a South Holland resident, was “struck by a vehicle and dragged some distance.”

Cook County medical examiner’s office said he was pronounced dead at 12:48 a.m. Sunday, but listed the cause of death as pending in its Monday report.

Based on the scene, police said the vehicle in question would have visible damage to its front end or lights.

Police asked anyone knows about a vehicle that suddenly has that sort of damage and may have been in the area to contact investigators at 708-331-3131, Ext. 2, or submit an anonymous tip at southholland.org.

“Any information, no matter how small it may seem, could be critical to identifying the person(s) responsible,” the village said.
