Employees at a New Lenox gas station found out they’d sold a $1 million winning lottery ticket days before the drawing for Powerball’s billion-dollar jackpot.
“I didn’t find out until the lottery guy came in and told me,” manager Sarah Pisar said. “We don’t know who it is, yet. No one’s come forward.”
The ticket matched all six numbers in the Saturday Lotto Million 2 drawing, the Illinois Lottery said in a news release.
Pisar said Wednesday afternoon more people had come in to the Gas N Wash, 1951 Laraway Road, to buy tickets since the news broke.
“Knowing that we sold it, they think we’re lucky,” Pisar said.
It’s the highest-value winning ticket the gas station has sold, Pisar said. They’d previously sold one worth around $100,000, she said, though they never found out who that customer was either.
Winners have one year from the drawing date to claim their prize, according to the Illinois Lottery.
Gas N Wash will receive a $10,000 bonus, 1% of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket, according to the lottery.
The Powerball jackpot of $1.04 billion, the eighth-largest jackpot in Powerball history, was won Wednesday by a player who purchased a ticket in downstate Quincy, according to a news release that called it the second-largest lottery prize ever won in Illinois.
“This is an exciting day for Illinois,” Harold Mays, director of the Illinois Lottery, said in a news release. “Beyond celebrating this incredible win, every Powerball ticket purchased during this jackpot run also helped generate funding for Illinois public schools, demonstrating how the Lottery continues to benefit communities across the state.”
