A local community coalition focused on violence prevention is hosting an event on Aug. 15 in Aurora set to feature free tacos, activities and giveaways of items like gun safes.

The event — called “Lighting the Way to a Safer Aurora” — is being put on by Project Safe Aurora, according to the Kane County Health Department, which serves as the coalition’s lead agency. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 15 at Bardwell Residences at 301 Weston Ave. in Aurora.

Project Safe Aurora aims to “foster awareness of gun violence, build bridges within the community and advocate for systemic changes that protect and uplift every resident of Aurora to reduce gun violence,” according to the health department’s website.

The August event will include free tacos, live music, family-friendly activities and opportunities to connect with local leaders, community advocates and organizations working to prevent violence, a news release from the Kane County Health Department said.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to “hear … stories of hope and resilience” from local leaders and advocates and learn about resources and services available to support individuals and families, the news release said.

“Lighting the Way to a Safer Aurora is a chance for neighbors to come together, enjoy a day of music, food, and community, and connect with the people and organizations working to make Aurora stronger and safer,” Michael Isaacson, the Kane County Health Department’s executive director, said in the release.

The event will also feature giveaways, including Chromebooks, graphing calculators, gun safes and gas gift cards, the news release said. The event is free and open to the public, and families are encouraged to attend, organizers said.
