CLH, CPAs & Consultants is welcoming five interns who will gain hands-on experience across the firm’s Northwest Indiana offices.
Joining CLH this summer are: Yongshi Huang, interning in the Valparaiso office, Purdue University Northwest; Naturelle Buikema, interning in the Valparaiso office, Purdue University Northwest; Lila Gillisse, interning in the LaPorte office, Trine University; Brianne Norman, interning in the LaPorte office, Purdue University Northwest; and Brooklynn Hough, completing another administrative internship, Indiana University Kelley School of Business.
This year’s intern class reflects CLH’s continued investment in developing future industry leaders while providing students with meaningful, real-world experience that complements their classroom education, a release said.
Hard Rock makes $45K donation to literacy council
Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana is donating $45,000 to the Gary Literacy Coalition Inc. to support its Pilot Community Reading Program, an initiative designed to help elementary and middle school students who are reading below grade level improve literacy skills and develop a lifelong love of reading.
The Pilot Community Reading Program provides targeted literacy intervention through small-group instruction, access to high-quality books, literacy kits, instructional materials and family engagement activities, according to a release. The investment will allow the Gary Literacy Coalition to expand its reach and provide additional resources that help students build reading confidence, fluency and comprehension.
The Gary Literacy Coalition includes several independent literacy projects and agencies working together to support, promote, enhance and coordinate literacy opportunities, the release said.
Franciscan hosting Aug. 10 Senior Day at county fair
Franciscan Health is again hosting the free Senior Day at the Lake County Fair in Crown Point for seniors 62 and older from 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 10.
Free health screenings and information on a variety of Franciscan Health programs and senior services will be available, a release said. Scheduled screenings include skin cancer spot checks, fall risk assessments, blood pressure, pulse ox, glucose, spirometry (lung function) and more.
Snacks, healthcare materials and giveaways are also included as well as a free shuttle service to and from the tent and around the fairgrounds.
The event will take place at the Lake County Fairgrounds’ Showcase Tent at the west end of the Midway near Gate 5 at 889 S. Court St. in Crown Point.
Produce Prescription Program announced
Franciscan Health is again teaming up with the Indy Hunger Network to support healthier lifestyles through nutritious food access and chronic disease management education through the free Produce Prescription Program, a release said.
The free program provides monthly prescriptions of fresh fruits and vegetables along with guidance and support to improve overall health and well-being.
Participants are not required to be patients within the Franciscan Health system to participate, the release said. To be eligible for the program, participants must have pre-existing chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer; screen positive for moderate to high food insecurity and complete a six-week Cooking Matters course.
The program will meet from 3-4:30 p.m. for six Tuesdays from Aug. 25 to Sept. 29 at the Franciscan Health Michigan City Legacy Campus, 301 W. Homer St., Michigan City. Munster bank acquired First Financial
First Financial Bancorp has acquired Peoples Bank in an all-stock transaction, according to a release.
Finward Bancorp, the parent company of Peoples Bank, jointly announced recently with First Financial that First Financial will acquire Munster-based Finward, which includes 24 financial centers and a 116-year presence in the Northwest Indiana and Chicago markets. The Finward acquisition increases its pro forma deposits in the Chicago metropolitan statistical area by 75% to more than $4 billion, the release said.
Upon completion of the transaction, Finward’s consumer, trust/wealth management and commercial credit lines of business will be incorporated into First Financial’s respective business lines, and Peoples Bank employees will become First Financial associates.
Under the terms of the agreement, each outstanding share of Finward common stock will be converted into the right to receive 1.35 shares of First Financial common stock, valuing the transaction at approximately $208 million, the release said.
