
U-46 SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNIZES FOUR STUDENTS
The District U-46 School Board recognized four students this month for their achievements in statewide athletic and academic competitions.
Devkee Patel, a student in the Central School Programs in Elgin, earned first place in the 25-meter backstroke and the 25-meter freestyle in her division at the Illinois Special Olympics Summer Games in June at Illinois State University, according to a news release. Rhea Raj, a student at South Elgin High School, placed first in the 25-meter backstroke in her division.
Both are part of the Blue Stars, the district’s Special Olympics team.
At the Illinois Future Problem Solving Bowl, held in April in Bloomington-Normal, Andrew Punnoose of Elgin High School placed first in the individual competition at the senior level and Teresa Punnoose of Glenbrook Elementary School in Streamwood placed first at the junior level.
In June, the two represented U-46 at the Future Problem Solving International Conference in Bloomington, Indiana, where they competed in the Global Issues Problem Solving competition. Also representing U-46 were Sonia Punnoose and Aryana Patel of Glenbrook Elementary School; Sophia Punnoose and Akshara Sivasankaran of Elgin High School; and Alisha Siddiqi and Mantas Bazys of Bartlett High School.
ELGIN HOLDING AUG. 8 RECYCLING, DISPOSAL EVENT
Elgin and LRS Waste Management Services will hold a recycling and disposal event from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Elgin Public Works Building, 1900 Holmes Road, Elgin.
The event is open to Elgin residents, who must present a valid Illinois driver’s license or state ID showing an Elgin address, according to the city’s website.
While many items are free to dispose of, the fee to recycle electronic and bulk items is $20 per vehicle, payable only by credit card. Those recycling large wood or metal television sets will be charged an additional $40. If the set is the only item being dropped off, the fee is $40, the website said.
Document shredding is free if that is the only requested service. People may bring up to three banker boxes of paper documents per vehicle.

MIDCENTURY MODERN HOUSE TOUR IN SLEEPY HOLLOW
Sleepy Hollow Service Club of Illinois and the Dundee Township Historical Society will hold a Sleepy Hollow Midcentury Modern Home Tour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8.
The self-guided tour will include six village homes, according to a social media post. Proceeds will help fund service club events and the historical society.

BASKETBALL TOURNEY, BACKPACK GIVEAWAY PLANNED
Brothers Rise Up and Taste the Love will hold 3-on-3 youth and adult basketball tournaments and a backpack giveaway Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8-9, at Carpentersville Middle School, 100 Cleveland Ave., Carpentersville.
There is no entry fee for teams competing in divisions set up for students in grades 5 through 12, according to the Taste the Love website. The entry fee for men’s and women’s teams is $25 per team.

PETITIONS TO RUN FOR ELGIN MAYOR, COUNCIL AVAILABLE
Petitions to run for mayor and four four-year terms on the Elgin City Council in the 2027 election are available at the Elgin City Clerk’s Office, Room 202 at City Hall, 150 Dexter Court.
Petitions must be filed with the city clerk betweem 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, and 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, according to a news release. The order of names on the ballot will be determined by the order of filing.
A primary election in February will be required only if more than 16 candidates file for the four council seats or more than four candidates file for mayor. The general election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 6.
Those running for the offices must be registered voters; residents of Elgin for at least a year prior to the election; up to date on taxes and other debts owed to the city of Elgin; and not convicted of a crime, unless eligibility has been granted by law.
