Two people were found dead of apparent gunshot wounds Thursday morning in a Harvey home, police said in a statement.

Harvey police responded at 7:23 a.m. to a home near Vine Avenue and 150th Street, where they found two people who were both declared dead at the scene.

“This senseless act of violence does not reflect the family environment of Harvey,” police Chief Dale Mitchell said at a news conference Thursday. “The full resources of the Harvey Police Department and our law enforcement partners will be brought to bear.”

Harvey police are investigating with assistance from the Illinois State Police, police said. The identities of the victims were being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.

Two dogs were also shot, leaving one dead and the other in critical condition, according to a statement from the city.

“I am totally heartbroken today,” Mayor Shirley Drewenski said at the news conference. “On behalf of the city, my condolences to the family and their loved ones. This is a painful day.”

Mitchell said that police were pursuing several lines of inquiry.

“We want to keep some things close to the vest to keep the integrity of the investigation,” Mitchell said.

Police encouraged anyone with information to call the Police Department detective division at 708-331-3030, Ext. 226.
