GRIFFITH MAN’S PLEA DEAL COULD NET HIM UP TO 10 YEARS
A Griffith man faces up to 10 years in a couple’s shooting during a November 2023 custody handoff, records show.
Calvin Gordon, 31, admitted in documents filed Tuesday to two counts of aggravated battery, both Level 3 felonies.
The plea deal has a 10 year cap on each charge. Under the deal, both sentences would run concurrently, or at the same time.
If a judge accepts, a sentencing hearing is Sept. 10.
Griffith Police were called Nov. 3, 2023 to the 1500 block of N. Arbogast, off Ridge Road, after witnesses heard a woman scream, gunshots, then screeching tires outside an apartment building.
A couple with three small kids were inside. The man was shot in the left leg, while the woman was shot in the arm.
The woman said they were there to drop off two kids she shared with Gordon.
In the plea agreement, Gordon admitted he opened fire at the vehicle, documents show.

A Gary man faces a 10-year split term after allegedly admitting he had sex with an underaged teen in the early 2000s.
Frederick Fenderson, 65, admitted in documents filed July 17 to sexual misconduct with a minor, a class B felony. The plea deal calls for four years in prison, two years in Lake County Community Corrections and four years on sex offender probation.
A judge would have to review and accept the deal.
A trial ended with a hung jury last year.
SCHERERVILLE MAN MAY RECEiVE SIX YEARS IN PRISON IN CHILD MOLESTING PLEA
A Schererville man faces a split term in a child molesting plea, documents show.
Phillip Staples, 66, admitted earlier this month to child molesting, a Level 4 felony and possession of child pornography, a Level 5 felony.
If a judge accepts, the plea calls for six years in prison and two years on sex offender probation, documents state. A sentencing hearing is scheduled on Aug. 19.
Police estimated the abuse happened between October 2014 and October 2020.
