Tuesday marked the first day nominating petitions could be circulated by those looking to run in Aurora’s April 2027 city election.

Six Aurora City Council seats will be up for election in the spring of 2027 – an at-large seat as well as spots on the council representing the 1st Ward, 3rd Ward, 5th Ward, 6th Ward and 8th Ward.

Aurora officials said informational packets detailing the requirements to run in the election are available at the city clerk’s office.

Those interested in running for office in Aurora must be a U.S. and Illinois citizen, a qualified elector of Aurora and a resident of the city for one year preceding the election.

Candidates are not eligible to hold office if they have unpaid taxes, fees, fines or service charges to the city, according to a press release from the city. Candidates are also not eligible if they have been convicted of a felony in the U.S.

The elected City Council member for each ward is required to be a resident of that ward at the time of election and remain in that ward during their term in office.

The first day that prospective candidates can file petitions with the city clerk is Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, the release said. The final day to file petitions is Monday, Oct. 26, 2026.

Once petitions are filed, candidates will have until Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, to file objections to nominating petitions, according to the release.

City officials said more information on the Aurora 2027 consolidated election can be found at www.aurora.il.us/Elections.
