MIDWEST LIVING PUTS FOX RIVER ON ‘BEST’ LIST

Midwest Living has ranked the Fox River as one of the nine best rivers in the Midwest for paddling and float trips.

The publication notes that the 200-mile Fox flows through towns that include Elgin, St. Charles, Aurora, Oswego and Yorkville. It also mentions the 40-mile Fox River Bike Trail that runs along the river, crosses under six bridges and passes through various nature preserves.

Other waterways cited were the Niobrara River in Nebraska, Root River in Minnesota, Meramec River in Missouri, Upper Iowa River in Iowa, Apple River in Wisconsin, Tippecanoe River in Indiana, Chippewa River in Michigan and Cuyahoga River in Ohio.

AFRO-BRAZILIAN CONCERT AT LORDS PARK ZOO

Chamber Music on the Fox will present a free concert by Arcomusical from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at Lords Park Zoo, 325 Hiawatha Drive, Elgin.

Arcomusical “reimagines the Afro-Brazilian berimbau through powerful chamber music. Their repertoire ranges from solos to sextets to concerti,” according to the Chamber on the Fox website. A berimbau is a musical bow made of wood and metal wire; a player uses a stick to hit the wire while controlling pitch with a metal disc or stone, according to online information.

SECOND CITY SHOW TO BENEFIT ANDERSON HUMANE

The Second City will present a benefit performance for Anderson Humane in South Elgin from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Arcada Theatre, 100 E. Main St., St. Charles.

A touring company of the Chicago improv comedy group will stage their newest revue, “Laughing for All the Wrong Reasons,” featuring sketches and songs from the company’s 66 years in addition to new material.

General admission is $45, and a 10-seat theater box is $750.

DUNDEE LIONS HOSTING BIKE SAFETY PROGRAM

Dundee Township Lions Club will hold a free bike safety program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Main Street Bicycles, 36 E. Main St., Carpentersville.

The event will feature bike inspections, a skills course for all ages and a review of the rules of the road for cyclists. Members of the Carpentersville, East Dundee and West Dundee police departments, Carpentersville Fire Department and state Rep. Suzanne Ness, D-Crystal Lake, will be in attendance.

ELGIN LIBRARY HOLDING TALK ON JULIA CHILD

A free online presentation on cooking icon Julia Child by Smithsonian curator Paula Johnson will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, by the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin.

Johnson is the author of “Julia Child’s Kitchen: The Design, Tools, Stories and Legacy of an Iconic Space,” the library website said. Her book includes interviews with chefs who knew Child and commentary on her favorite kitchen utensils.

Johnson is director of the Smithsonian’s Food History Project and one of the curators who brought Child’s home kitchen to the Smithsonian 25 years ago. She also oversaw the creation of an exhibit that looks at major changes in food production, distribution and consumption in the United States since the 1950s.
