
Illinois State Police are investigating the death of a man while in Oak Lawn police custody, the agency said in a news release.
Johnall J. Walker, of Lisle, became unresponsive after ingesting an unknown substance while officers were transporting him to the police department July 20, the news release says. Officers provided medical aid before bringing him to a hospital, where he stayed until he was pronounced dead at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to state police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
As of Monday morning, the medical examiner’s office said the cause of death was still pending.
The 43-year-old was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine and methamphetamine, according to court records. Traffic citations including failing to signal before a left turn, disobeying a traffic signal, failing to stop at a stop sign before a crosswalk and having illegal tinted windows.

Walker was scheduled to appear before Judge Linzey Jones on Wednesday, which was rescheduled to Aug. 5 due to the hospitalization.
Illinois State Police’s public integrity task force is in charge of the investigation into Walker’s death. Oak Lawn Police Department requested the investigation, state police say.
