The body of a man was recovered from the Fox River in downtown Elgin early Thursday morning, according to Elgin police.

Reponding to a call about 2:45 a.m., police found the body near the 200 block of South Grove Avenue, a police department social media post said.

“Information regarding the identity of the male will be withheld at this time pending a determination by the Kane County coroner’s office,” the post said.

It’s not known whether the victim might be the man who fled into the Fox River on June 26 while fleeing police. A two-day search of the river by rescue teams did not turn up the man’s body.

According to a police report issued at the time, officials said a man believed to be interfering with railroad operations near Highland Avenue and State Street was approached by police but opted to go into the river rather than surrendering to officers. Police noted that the suspect was carrying a large knife.

Rescuers tried to reach him in the water but he went under and was unable to be located, police said. No other details on what triggered the pursuit were provided.
