A 23-year-old Chicago resident who previously lived in South Holland was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his participation in three armed robberies of armored trucks and ATMs in Calumet City and Orland Park, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Perry Maple pleaded guilty in March to federal charges of robbery and armed robbery and was sentenced July 16 by U.S. District Judge Robert W. Gettleman.

Maple was a member of a 10-person crew charged in connection with 11 armed robberies, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a news release Tuesday. During one of the armed robberies between January 2022 and March 2023, Maple drove a stolen car into a bank in a “crowded shopping plaza,” shoving and pointing a gun at an ATM technician as he and another crew member took about $155,000 from the ATM, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Maple acted as the getaway driver in the two other robberies, taking about $700,000 total, the news release states. He graduated from high school in Chicago in 2020, working as a forklift driver before getting a job forging steel, according to Gettleman’s sentencing order.

On the morning of May 18, 2023, Perry Maple was a free man with a good job, Gettleman said.

“By 4 p.m. he was in handcuffs and facing a long prison sentence.”

Maple was 18 at the time of the first robbery, which was his first offense, Gettleman said.

“Everything in Perry Maple’s life before and after these robberies suggest that a sentence of five years on the robbery and the 7 mandatory years on the gun charge is a sentence which will achieve the goals of (the federal statute) and bring about long-term behavior change,” the judge stated.

Calumet City police Chief Kevin Kolosh on Thursday thanked the FBI and U.S. attorney’s office for their work on the case and said the city has seen a reduction in some violent crimes over the past several years.

The Daily Southtown previously reported a 35% drop in homicides across the Southland in 2025. Calumet City reported no homicides for 2025, eight in 2024 and six in 2023.

“Those who commit crimes, especially crimes of violence, will be held accountable and will face serious consequences,” Kolosh said.

He said while the armed robbery case was handed over to the federal government, the local police department is fully staffed and taking a proactive approach to prevent similar crimes from taking place in Calumet City.

As officials across the region notice an uptick of video gaming terminal and ATM burglaries, Mayor Thaddeus Jones said police recently met with owners of local bars and other businesses asking them to work with the city to address the growing issue.

“We want to make sure that we stay on top of that, and the only way we can do that is if we work together, they work together with us and they alert us when suspicious activity happens in their place,” Jones said. “Otherwise, we wouldn’t know about it.”
