Maine Township is set to receive new state funding to help offset the cost and build-out of a brand-new food pantry building recently approved in April at the Annual Town Meeting, now that Gov. JB Pritzker has signed the state budget.

According to a news release, the property located at 9850 Milwaukee Avenue was officially purchased for $ 1 million on July 10. The new dual $500,000 grants totaling $1 million will help with direct and indirect costs for the new location’s acquisition, development and maintenance costs.

“We are so grateful to Senator Laura Murphy and State Representative Justin Cochran for their continued advocacy for the needs of Maine Township by securing funding for these initiatives,” Supervisor Kim Jones said in a statement. “Our Township and the evolving needs of residents continue to grow and expand. Securing this funding for the new state-of-the-art Food Pantry will go a very long way to continue meeting and exceeding these needs.”

Additionally, re-allocation amounts totaling $670,000 for new flooring throughout the Township Hall, aid in addiction recovery for residents, and investment in public infrastructure throughout the community were included in the budget’s passage, the release said.

With the bill’s signing,  township officials will begin working with the various awarding agencies to execute grant agreements and access the funding when the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget allows, according to the release.
