BUSINESSMAN RAY KINNEY NAMED NCC BOARD CHAIR

Naperville businessman J. Raymond “Ray” Kinney III was selected as chair of the North Central College Board of Trustees, succeeding Michael Naset, who remains an active board member after serving a two-year chair term.

Kinney, who has an honorary degree from the college, joined its board in 2001 and most recently served as chair of its Enrollment Management and Marketing Committee, a news release from North Central College said.

He is the founder and partner of Blooming Color, a commercial printing company based in Lombard. He is also a founder of and partner at Maclyn, a creative and marketing agency based in Naperville.

According to the news release, he has worked with and hired numerous North Central graduates.

REGIONAL ED OFFICE GIVING AWAY BACKPACKS

The Will County Regional Office of Education is hosting back-to-school backpack giveaways in Bolingbrook and Crete for families across Will County.

Backpacks will be filled with essential school supplies to ease the financial burden on families, a news release from the education office said.

The first giveaway will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, July 31 at the Early Learning Center, 1500 S. Sangamon St., Crete. Jet Dental will offer free dental exams at this location only.

The second is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Brooks Middle School, 350 Blair Lane, Bolingbrook.

Backpacks will be distributed while supplies last, the release said. A parent or guardian must accompany each child to receive a backpack.

NEW ROCK THE BLOCK CONCERT SERIES STARTING

The inaugural Rock the Block concert series featuring free live music will be held Thursday evenings at Block 59 in Naperville.

Whiskey Friends-The Morgan Wallen Experience on will kick off the weekly shows on July 23. Held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the green at Block 59, 404 Route 59, future concerts include 16 Candles on July 30, Hillbilly Rockstarz on Aug. 6, Fearless, a Taylor Swift tribute, on Aug. 13, Hi Infidelity on Aug. 20 and 7th Heaven on Aug. 27.

CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY APPLICATIONS DUE JULY 30

Applications to take part in this fall’s Citizen Police Academy are due Thursday, July 30.

The 10-week academy will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 2 through Nov. 4 at the Naperville Police Department, 1350 Aurora Ave.

The academy is designed to give residents an insight into the inner workings of the police department through lectures and hands-on demonstrations, police said in a news release. Various aspects of police work, such as investigations, forensics and special response, are covered in the program.

Classes are limited to 30 participants. Applicants must be at least 18, live or work in Naperville and pass a criminal background check.
