Four men were shot, one fatally, near a CTA train station in Washington Park on the city’s South Side Thursday night, authorities said.

A black vehicle pulled up to a large group standing in the 5100 block of South Calumet Avenue next to the 51st Green Line station just after 9 p.m. and opened fire, Chicago police said, citing preliminary investigation. Four people were shot and transported to local hospitals, while the black vehicle fled east on 51st Street, police said.

A 44-year-old man was transported to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his chest and pronounced dead soon afterward, police said. A 54-year-old man was also transported to U. of C. Medical in good condition for a gunshot wound to his body.

The man who was killed had not yet been formally identified as of Friday afternoon.

Two other men, 34 and 35, were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, also in good condition. The 34-year-old was shot in the legs, and the 35-year-old was shot across his body.

There were more than 60 rifle casings at the intersection of 51st and Calumet Thursday night as police surveyed the scene. Smoke hung heavy in the air as a perimeter of red police tape lined the entrance to the train station.

Wentworth Area detectives were investigating.
