A 23-year-old woman has died and a 30-year-old man was critically injured and later charged with DUI and reckless homicide after a fatal two-vehicle crash Saturday night in Aurora, according to the Aurora Police Department.
At around 10:49 p.m. Saturday, Aurora police officers and firefighters responded to the intersection of Church and Butterfield roads in Aurora for a report of a crash involving a blue Hyundai sedan and a gray Toyota pickup truck, according to a news release Tuesday from the Aurora Police Department.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the drivers of both vehicles with serious injuries, the release said.
Aurora Fire Department paramedics took the driver of the Hyundai, a 23-year-old woman, to Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where she was later pronounced dead, according to the police department. An autopsy was ultimately conducted on Monday by the Kane County Coroner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death.
The driver of the Toyota, Irven Pinedo, 30, of Aurora, was taken to another local hospital, where he remains in critical condition, the police department said in the news release Tuesday.
The police department’s Traffic Division responded to reconstruct the scene, which remained closed for several hours, the news release said. Members of the Aurora Emergency Management Agency assisted with traffic control and scene lighting throughout the investigation, the release said.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the Hyundai was traveling westbound on Butterfield Road and attempting to turn left onto Church Road, when it was struck by the eastbound Toyota pickup truck, according to the police department.
As the investigation continued, Pinedo was ultimately arrested and charged with reckless homicide, aggravated driving under the influence causing death, aggravated driving under the influence – third violation and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, according to the Aurora Police Department. He was also issued misdemeanor and petty offense citations for driving under the influence and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, the release said.
