Bob Cohn announced Thursday during Chesterton’s Park Board meeting that he is stepping down from the board because he is moving out of town.

Cohn had served six years on Chesterton’s Park Board and his current term was set to run through Dec. 31, 2028. The Town Council appoints the park board members.

He is moving to Valparaiso next week to be closer to his family.

“I want to thank everyone for the six years I have been here. I think we have been able to do a lot of good stuff. And I will be close enough to still be a part of it,” Cohn said.

Park Board President Paul Shinn said that Cohn will be missed because he was a “very active board member.”

Chesterton Parks Superintendent Tyler McLead echoed Shinn’s praise, noting that being a park board member “goes well beyond” attending a monthly meeting.

“Bob’s been a great board member and great supporter of me. We’ll miss him,” McLead said.

The Park Board voted Thursday to formally revise the master plan for its parks, which runs through 2029.

McLead said after the meeting that the major revision concerns plans for the east side of Dogwood Park, which encompasses north of County Road 1100 N.

The superintendent and park board decided that a dog park would be developed on the east side of Dogwood Park, rather than on 27 acres of undeveloped land the town owns off Dickinson Road.

Other improvements for the east side of Dogwood Park would include refurbishing the ball fields and resurfacing the basketball courts.

McLead said the town is applying for grant money to fund the projects and it is hoped that construction could happen in 2027 or 2028.
