Former high school football star Keshawn Lewis-Hunt, 20, was killed early Monday morning in Harvey, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The Harvey Police Department said officers responded to the shooting at 1:17 a.m. Monday in the 16000 block of Ashland Avenue.
Lewis-Hunt was pronounced dead at 1:54 a.m. at UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital, according to the medical examiner’s office, which on Tuesday ruled the death a homicide by multiple gunshot wounds.
Lewis-Hunt played for Bremen High School in Midlothian as a running back before transferring to Morgan Park High School in Chicago.
In 2022, Lewis-Hunt scored three touchdowns for Bremen in a game against Oak Forest High School, the Daily Southtown reported. Lewis-Hunt, then a junior, was referred to as part of Bremen’s “three-headed monster” of powerful running backs.
Lewis-Hunt was signed to Eastern Illinois University’s football team in 2024, according to a post from Morgan Park High School’s football program.
“Eastern Illinois University is deeply saddened by the death of former Panther football student-athlete Keshawn Lewis-Hunt,” the university said in a statement. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to Keshawn’s family, friends, teammates and all who knew him, and the University is providing support and resources to those impacted by this loss.”
Lewis-Hunt’s player profile on the university’s website said he was a two-time All-Chicago Public League selection, and said during his high school senior season he averaged 4.4 yards per carry, rushing for 596 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Next Level Athletics Chicago also posted a tribute to Lewis-Hunt.
“A young man with a bright future, a college football player, and someone who meant so much to so many, Keshawn’s life was taken far too soon,” the tribute read. “Rest in peace, Keshawn. You will never be forgotten.”
The Harvey Police Department and Illinois State Police are investigating, and police asked anyone with information to contact the Harvey Police Department detective division at 708-331-3030, Ext. 226.
