Extra South Shore Line trains will begin operating Monday while the railroad continues to operate on a holiday/weekend schedule.

The extra westbound train, making all stops, will leave at 5:15 am. Monday through Friday from Munster/Dyer, arriving at Millennium Station at 6:08 a.m., according to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, which operates the South Shore Line.

The extra eastbound train leaves Millennium Station at 4:35 p.m. Monday through Friday and arrives at Munster/Dyer at 5:38 p.m.

The holiday/weekend schedule has been in effect since service was restored following a 13-car South Shore Freight derailment on the Grand Calumet River Bridge near the East Chicago station.

Passengers are being bused between Hammond Gateway Station and East Chicago while repairs are being made to the catenary system that powers the electric rail cars. Both the supports and overhead wires were affected.

No bikes are permitted on buses.

Soon after the derailment, Metra Electric honored South Shore Line passenger tickets, but that’s no longer happening, NICTD said.
