The new baby elk at Phillips Park Zoo in Aurora will be named Benji, the city recently announced, after the public cast more than 800 votes weighing in on the name.

The baby elk was born on June 6 to its mother, Aashi, at the zoo. Aashi is about 10 years old and joined the zoo’s elk herd in April, officials said.

The city invited the public to vote on the baby elk’s name, giving them the opportunity to choose between five options put together by the city’s zoo staff: Chet, Barry, Benji, Kiran and Asher.

Now, after the conclusion of the voting period, the public has decided on Benji.

Those interested in seeing the new baby elk can visit Phillips Park Zoo, at 1000 Ray Moses Drive, on Thursdays through Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on Aurora’s Phillips Park Zoo, go to https://zoo.aurora.il.us.
