Naperville Municipal Band will hold a free patriotic concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 2. in Central Park, 104 E. Benton Ave.
The band will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a performance of patriotic music, including the “1812 Overture” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky featuring the firing of real cannons.
Other patriotic favorites include the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “America the Beautiful,” the Armed Forces Salute and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
The Naperville Chorus will join the band with a rendition of “God Bless America.”
All weekly summer municipal band concerts are free and take place Thursday nights through Aug. 13.

FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT PLANS LOCAL ACTIVITIES
The Forest Preserve District of Will County has several activities planned for July at Whalon Lake and the Riverview Farmstead Preserve in Naperville and the Hidden Oaks Preserve in Bolingbrook.
A free helmet check for all ages will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 10, at Whalon Lake, located on Royce Road, west of Route 53. District staff near the Lakeside Shelter will be check that helmets fit and are properly secured.
“Boats, Bats and Barns — The Riverview Nightlife Experience” will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 10, at the Riverview Farmstead Preserve, on Book Road, south of Hassert Boulevard. Participants can paddle the DuPage River at dusk, learn about bats, and eat hot dogs and s’mores around a campfire.
Open to anyone 16 or older, participants much have previous kayaking experience. Registration is $20 per person by July 8. Register by calling 815-722-9301 or going to www.reconnectwithnature.org.
In Bolingbrook, participants can complete nature journaling activities and contribute to a community journal from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays to Sundays throughout July at the Hidden Oaks Nature Center, 419 Trout Farm Road. Journaling guides are available in multiple languages and prizes will be given for participating.
Hidden Oaks is also holding a sidewalk chalk contest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends throughout July. The Tackle Box bait shop will provide chalk and artwork will be photographed for a contest with prizes.
Winners will be chosen for most creative, most nature-themed and best artist in the making, a district news release said.
