A Naperville man who kicked his wife to death because she had received text messages from another man will serve 38 years in prison.

Alan Wang, 62, formerly of the 1100 block of North Mill Street, was sentenced by DuPage County Judge Celine O’Hallaren Walsh on two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the March 2020 fatal attack on his 35-year-old wife, Hongyan Yang, a DuPage County state’s attorney’s office news release said.

Initially charged with domestic battery when arrested, the charges were upgraded to murder in September 2020 and Wang was convicted by O’Hallaren Walsh in October 2025 following a four-day bench trial, the release said.

According to prosecutors, police were called to the couple’s home on March 9, 2020, by a relative after finding that Yang was not breathing. The previous day, Wang had kicked his wife multiple times after finding text messages on his wife’s phone; an autopsy by the DuPage County coroner’s office found the woman had died as a “result of blunt force trauma due to assault,” the release said.

“The violent beating Alan Wang administered to his wife that resulted in her death, is yet another tragic reminder that domestic violence continues to plague society,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

“Regrettably, there is still a significant amount of work to be done to prevent domestic violence, and in extreme cases, tragedies such as what we saw with the death of Hongyan Yang. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Violent Death Reporting System, in 2023, the most recent year statistics are available, 1,373 women lost their lives at the hands of a spouse or intimate partner.”

Wang will be required to serve 100% of his sentence before being eligible for parole, the release said.
