A Waukegan woman has been sentenced to two years in prison for killing a friend by running over her with a car, according to Lake County authorities.

Gabriela Martinez, 29, pleaded guilty last week to reckless homicide charges stemming from the death of Alyssa Charles, 24, also of Waukegan.

Martinez reversed her car over Charles in the driveway of a North Chicago home in the early morning hours of Jan. 15, 2022.

Authorities said the pair, along with two other friends, had come to the house in the 1500 block of Lincoln, where another friend lived.

While still inside the vehicle, the argument broke out and Charles, who had been in a rear seat, exited the vehicle. After she got out, Charles realized she had left items in the car and began pounding on the rear window, authorities said in 2022.

She ended up behind the vehicle as Martinez backed out of the driveway and was run over.

Under the terms of her guilty plea, Martinez was sentenced to two years in prison, though she could be released in about a year. She was placed on 30 months of probation and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.

Martinez also was sentenced to 180 days in the Lake County jail, though the term will not be imposed if she successfully completes probation. She was also barred from using alcohol or going to bars, according to court records.
