The death of a 5-year-old child in Riverdale who was fatally shot last week is under investigation, the Riverdale Police Department said in a statement.

Police said officers responded to a report of a child with a gunshot wound at 6:05 p.m. June 9 on the 13900 block of South State Street.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Roson Garret, pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m.

Three people inside the home at the time, all of whom were family members, were taken into custody and later released pending further investigation, police said.

“The release of these individuals should not be interpreted as the conclusion of this case,” police said.

All evidence is being examined, and if there is sufficient evidence for criminal charges, then those charges will be pursued, police said.

“This tragedy has deeply affected everyone involved in the response,” Riverdale police Chief Mark Kozeluh said in a statement. “We ask the community to keep the victim, the victim’s loved ones, and all those affected by this tragedy in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
