Three adults have been displaced after a residential building was deemed uninhabitable following a fire Thursday in Aurora, according to the Aurora Fire Department.

At around 12:10 p.m., the fire department responded to a reported structure fire in the 600 block of Front Street on the city’s East Side, according to a news release from the Aurora Fire Department.

While crews were on their way, Aurora police officers arrived and reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure’s second floor, which prompted the incident to be upgraded to a second alarm, the fire department said.

Arriving firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions on the second floor of a 2½-story, three-unit residential building, with smoke and fire extending into the attic, the news release said. Initial reports had indicated that a possible occupant may have been inside the structure, but a search of the building confirmed that no residents or animals were present.

The fire was ultimately brought under control within around 30 minutes of the initial 911 call, per the fire department.

Crews remained on scene for more than two hours conducting overhaul operations and investigating the cause of the fire, the news release said, and ComEd and Nicor responded to secure utilities serving the building.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported in connection with the fire, the fire department said, but the building was deemed uninhabitable due to fire damage, displacing three adults. The rear apartment unit on the upper floor sustained the most significant damage, the department said.

The property owner is assisting the displaced tenants with temporary housing arrangements, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Aurora Fire Department fire investigators, the department said.
