A Cary-area man has been charged with reckless homicide and driving under the influence of drugs stemming from a January crash in which an elderly man was killed, according to Lake County authorities.

The sheriff’s office said it has arrested Ryan Rinda, 30, of the 28900 block of West Park Street, for having cocaine in his system when he struck a disabled vehicle, killing its 95-year-old driver.

The collision happened on Jan. 13 at about 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Quentin Road in Deer Park.

Police said Rinda was headed west on Lake Cook when his Honda HR-V struck a disabled car stopped in the roadway.

Police said the disabled vehicle, a 2006 Honda Accord, was being driven by Richard A. Krzysztofiak of Palatine. After his car stalled, Krzysztofiak got out and was looking under the front when Rinda rear-ended the car, police said.

Police said Rinda’s vehicle was going 50 mph just before the crash.

The collision killed Krzysztofiak, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in his car, a 77-year-old woman, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Rinda also sideswiped a school bus that only carried the driver, who was not hurt.

The sheriff’s office said an arrest warrant was issued in late April for Rinda, and he was taken into custody on Wednesday morning at his home.

In addition to the DUI causing death counts, Rinda has been charged with reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated DUI while license revoked.
