Anwar Nasir will take over the role in late summer or early fall, following the departure of Paul Winberg, president since 2011. Winberg’s retirement on April 30 was announced last fall.
The Grant Park Music Festival is the longtime organization that presents the free classical music series in Millennium Park every summer. Its Grant Park Orchestra, led by the newly appointed artistic director and principal conductor Giancarlo Guerrero, kicks off this summer’s season soon with a June 10 concert of Leonard Bernstein’s music from “West Side Story.”
Nasir comes to Chicago from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in New Orleans, where he served as executive director since 2021.
“He brings collaborative leadership, dynamic energy, strong strategic and management experience, and a demonstrated ability to build meaningful partnerships across communities,” GPMF board chair Thomas Orlando said in part in a statement. “Anwar is uniquely well-positioned to lead us into our next chapter.”
The Festival is looking ahead to its 100th season in 2035. Along with Guerrero and Orlando, it’s led by Grant Park Chorus director Christopher Bell and CFO and interim president and CEO Hannah Lehman.
