A federal judge has sentenced an Arlington Heights man to 15 years in federal prison for illegally possessing a loaded handgun, which he used to assault a man at a Glenview motel in 2024, according to a news release from the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

U.S. District Judge Martha M. Pacold sentenced Dirk Hugo, 49, of Arlington Heights, on May 12, applying the statutory maximum sentence.

Hugo was arrested in May 2024, one month after striking a man’s head with a gun in a Glenview motel, according to the news release.

Upon Hugo’s arrest in a parking garage in Arlington Heights, police found him with a loaded handgun in his waistband and wearing a bulletproof vest, per the news release.

According to the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Hugo had previously been convicted of multiple felony firearm offenses in state court and was legally prohibited from owning a firearm.

He has remained in custody since his 2024 arrest, according to the news release.

“As [the] defendant’s criminal record makes clear, he absolutely refuses to give up his firearms despite decades of being told that he cannot possess a gun,” Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephanie C. Stern and Simar Khera noted in the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois’ sentencing memorandum.

Hugo’s sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois Andrew S. Boutros and Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI Douglas DePodesta.
