ELGIN RANKED SIXTH-BEST PLACE TO LIVE IN ILLINOIS

U.S. News & World Report has ranked Elgin as the sixth best place to live in the state of Illinois.

Cities were evaluated for value, quality of life, desirability and job market strength. The publication noted that Elgin’s population is almost 116,000, the median home price is about $280,000, the median rent is about $1,200 per month and the median annual household income is more than $94,000. It also noted that the city has a job market similar to other cities of its size.

Elgin also ranked as the 23rd best medium-sized city to live in the United States, the 74th best place to live in the country overall and the 217th best place to retire, according to the magazine.

REGISTRATION BEGINS FOR KIDS UNITED PROGRAM

Registration has started for the Elgin Police Department’s Kids United program, which will run from June 22 to Aug. 11 at Abbott Middle School, 949 Van St., Elgin.

The free program offers a variety of activities for children, including art, sports, cooking, swimming and life skills lessons, according to the city of Elgin website. Food will be provided.

Drop-in sessions are open to Elgin and Elgin Township residents and students who attend School District U-46 schools. They will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. for children entering grades 4 to 6 in the fall and 6:30 to 9 p.m. for children entering grades 7 to 12.

HUFFMAN TENNIS COURTS CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS

The tennis courts at Huffman Park, 811 Tartans Drive, West Dundee, are closed because of unsafe surface conditions, according to the Dundee Township Park District website.

Work to replace the courts is expected to be finished sometime this fall, with the project including the conversion of some of the space into pickleball courts.

The park district has tennis courts that remain open at Grafelman Park, 112 N. Fifth St., West Dundee; Lions Park, 570 Penny Ave., East Dundee; and Sleepy Hollow Park, 875 Winmoor Drive, Sleepy Hollow. The tennis courts at Grafelman and Lions have lines for pickleball play.

FREE LIVE MUSIC BEING OFFERED IN ST. CHARLES

A series of free summer music performances called STC Live! will be presented twice a week starting Wednesday, June 3, at First Street Plaza in downtown St. Charles and at various St. Charles businesses, organizers said.

More than 35 acts will take the stage over the course of the summer, with shows starting at 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays through Sept. 28, a news release said.

On June 3, Matt Keen will perform at The Office Dining & Spirits, 201 E. Main St., and Leslie Hunt at First Street Plaza, the release said. The schedule of future shows can be found at stcalliance.org/stclive.

“St. Charles has such a vibrant live music scene, and we’re thrilled to offer the community free performances on the First Street Plaza and at many of our wonderful local businesses,” Jenna Sawicki, St. Charles Business Alliance executive director, said in the release.

BATAVIA TO CELEBRATE FLAG DAY ON JUNE 14

Batavia’s Flag Day activities, which this year will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, start at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 14.

From 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Batavia City Council chambers at the downtown Jeffery D. Schielke Government Center, representative flags from the Revolutionary War through today will be on display. Several are historic flags, organizers said.

At 2:45 p.m., the American flag will be raised at the Flag Day Monument on the Riverwalk followed by the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner, a news release said.

The free, public event will also feature musical performances by the Batavia Community Band, the announcement of poster contest winners, a celebration of veterans/first responders/patriotic organizations, the unveiling of new personalized bricks, a ribbon-cutting for the newly installed Liberty Education Plaza and the creation of a human flag in the parking lot to the west the government center.
