A traffic crash involving two Chicago Transit Authority buses in Garfield Park Wednesday night left a CTA driver critically wounded and several other commuters injured, authorities said.

A male driver in a Subaru sedan was traveling eastbound on Lake Street when he disregarded a red light and struck a CTA bus traveling southbound on Homan Avenue just after 6:40 p.m., according to Chicago police. That initial crash then caused the struck bus to collide with another CTA bus that was traveling northbound on Homan, police said.

The driver of the second CTA bus was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. Seven passengers were transported to local hospitals. Police said the passengers’ conditions were unknown.

A Chicago Fire Department spokesperson said first responders initially transported 11 people at the scene, including one person in serious to critical condition, five people in fair condition and five people in stable condition. Eleven other people refused transport, the spokesperson said.

The sedan driver, who was transported to Stroger in stable condition, was issued multiple citations, police said.

The CTA, in response to a request for comment Wednesday night, reiterated preliminary information available about the crash and referred to police for further inquiry.
