A 13-year-old boy critically injured in a shooting in the city’s South Chicago neighborhood last week has died, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and police.

Police officers discovered the boy lying in the 8200 block of South Coles Avenue with a gunshot wound to his head on the afternoon of May 21, Chicago police previously stated, citing preliminary information. The boy was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

After a week spent in the hospital, the boy — identified as DeAntwan McKeever, of West Town — died just after 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Police on Thursday night said that detectives are investigating the case as a homicide, but that no arrests had been made.
